"Photography Isn't A Job.."
(on Saturday, Christmas Day)
Niece 1: You're working tomorrow?
Me: yeah
Niece 1: Where are you working?
Me: In Oakland.
(little lines later)
Niece 2: I was told photography isn't a job..
Me: Wutha?! Who told you that?
Niece 2: My Ate ___.
Me: WHAT?! She said that?
Niece 2: Yeah, she said it's not a job it's a hobby.
Me: Well it's a job. I get paid for doing it. So apparently it's a job.
Niece 2: How much do you get paid? Do you get paid a lot?
Me: uhh wutha? it depends on what I'm taking pictures of. Like weddings, family portraits, sports, etc..
Niece 2: Oh, yeah my Ate told me that it's a hobby not a job. but oh k.
Me: hmmm.. oh k
So I didn't go into what I wanted my Niece to hear.. But that totally pissed me off of what her Ate told her. First of all, YES, Photography is a hobby but it is my job. I got lucky to get paid in what I love doing. Getting to take pictures and being creative with it and getting paid to do it is a dream. That's why I pursued in it. The thought of telling your niece that something isn't what it is, photography not being a job, is like saying making clothing or drawing/sculpturing isn't a job. Making clothes and drawing/sculpturing is a hobby but people can get paid by doing them. How does Vera Wang get paid or those people sew get paid? How were Toy Story creators or those who creates Mickey and Friends get paid? So having my niece dissing my career is like a slap in the face because she didn't even know what I've been doing this whole time, if she believed her Ate. Her Ate was never around and her saying it's not a job and it's "just" a hobby, apparently she doesn't know about photojournalism or photographers at special occasions/events do. It's in magazines right? You see them on the internet right? You look at them when you look at menus right? People get paid to take those. Unlike her I'm making things happen, accomplishing and pursuing my dreams and goals. I didn't get kicked out of my house and I'm not working at Chuck E. Cheese. That's right. I put that on blast, I have no shame, I'm just telling the truth. I'm actually doing work and helping my family out. I pay most of the bills at home and on top of that I'm paying my loans. That's 5+ different bills right there. So tell me again:
How is Photography not a "damn" job?
